EAST LONDON'S PANATHLON FINALS ON THE WAY
Tuesday 25 March will see schools from East London battle it out to be crowned Panathlon Challenge East Champions. Borough teams will also compete for the Panathlon Plate title, for teams who just missed out on this year's champions final. The overall winners of both finals will go on to represent their region at the London final at the Olympic Park on 18 June.
To add a touch of stardust to the event, Panathlon are also excited to welcome their patron, legendary Paralympic swimmer, Liz Johnson, to this year's East London Champions final. Competing in the 100m breaststroke S6 class, Liz clinched bronze in the London Paralympics, silver at Athens and a gold medal in Beijing and has been instrumental in recently introducing swimming to the Panathlon sporting calendar.
Joining Liz at the Plate finals will be Paralympian Danny Crates. As an 800m runner for team GB, he is a Paralympic gold medal winner, World Champion, European Champion, Paralympic World Cup Winner and was the face of Channel 4's coverage of the Paralympic games. Danny was Panathlon's very first ambassador way back in 2009.
The boroughs competing for this year's Challenge East Champions title will be Barking & Dagenham (Jo Richardson, Trinity, All Saints, Eastbrook, Barking Abbey, Robert Clack), Newham (St Angelas, Langdon Academy, Rokerby, Plashet, Little Ilford, Eastlea, St Bons & Royal Docks), Hackney (Stormont House & Garden) and Waltham Forest (Whitefield, Brookfield & William Morris).
Battling it out for this year's Panathlon Plate title will be Islington (Richard Cloudesley, The Bridge, Samuel Rhodes), Tower Hamlets (Beatrice Tate & Phoenix), Redbridge (Seven Kings & Little Heath) and Havering (Hallmead and Ravensbourne).
Hosted in the £21m state-of-the-art facilities at University of East London's Sports Dock, schools in both tournaments will compete at boccia, polybat, new age kurling, table cricket, and field events and athletics races with a medals ceremony and presentation to round-off the proceedings.
As always, a positive spirit of competition has been key to ensuring the continuing success of this year's Panathlon Challenge tournaments. One Tower Hamlets teacher noted that: “Students always have fun at Panathlon” and that the sports are played in a “competitive but supportive atmosphere”. As well as this competitive aspect, Panathlon is “a great chance for our pupils to meet students from other schools through sports and their students don’t get many opportunities like this.”
Jack Petchey CBE says: “Panathlon is evidence that all young people can participate and achieve through sport regardless of their disability. These youngsters demonstrate that if you think you can, you really can! We look forward to seeing even more disabled young people taking part in the future.“
Lord Seb Coe, Chairman of the British Olympic Association says: “I am proud that partners such as Panathlon are delivering on our vision of the Olympic and Paralympic Games boosting sports participation.”
Panathlon provides multi-sport competition for over 3,000 disabled children each year, predominantly across London and the south-east. 125 London schools from all 32 boroughs were involved in 2013, with 15,000 active hours of sport provided to disabled children.

Essex Cricket Club returns to SportsDock
By Thomas Reeves
Essex Cricket Club continued their preparation for the 2014 season with a second trip in as many years to the University of East London’s SportsDock facilities.
Essex endured mixed fortunes last campaign. The high point of their season came when they reached the Twenty20 finals day, where they lost to eventual winners Northamptonshire in the semi-final.
Reece Topley, 19, was among the players that were playing in their first finals day.
“It was a really nice day,” he admitted. “All eyes in English Cricket were on us, so there was a lot of pressure. But, it was really enjoyable to be a part of and great fun.”
The side weren’t as successful in the LV County Championship division two, as they finished just outside the promotion places, despite Coach Paul Grayson claiming the four-day format was their priority last year.
Experienced South African cricketer Greg Smith defended his Coach’s claim and responded, “I think everyone that is in (the LV County Championship) division two is aiming to get promoted. So, hopefully, we will (gain promotion to the LV County Championship division one) this time around.”
Essex have added Monty Panesar to their ranks in the close-season after he was released from Sussex. With the addition of Panesar, who has 50 England test caps, Saj Mahmood feels the squad should have only one goal this campaign.
“The aim has got to be to win trophies,” Mahmood, 32, said. “If you aren’t desperate to win trophies, then you probably shouldn’t be in this profession. I feel we are strong enough now (to compete for major honours).”
Topley complimented the facilities in SportsDock, “They are really good. The environment around here is nice. There is a lovely feel to the place.”
Essex will start their forthcoming competitive campaign against Derbyshire on the 13th April. SportsDock is available to hire to groups of elite athletes, for more information email SportsDock.

Legend Ilias Iliadis will be at London Area Universities & Colleges Open
Olympic gold medallist Ilias Iliadis is set to appear at the London Area Universities and Colleges Open on Sunday 24 November 2013 at SportsDock in the University of East London.
The Georgian-born Greek judoka won a gold medal for his home nation Greece at the Athens 2004 Olympics in the 81kg division, aged just 17.
The judo legend also went on to take another gold six years later at the 2010 World Judo Championships in Tokyo in the −90kg category.
It is also fitting that, 18 months after he also took Olympic bronze at London 2012 in the -90kg division, he will also be presenting some of the medals at this event too.
SportsDock itself also has an Judo Olympic connection. It was the place of study for Great Britain’s Olympic silver medallist Gemma Gibbons and is a few minutes walk from the ExCel Centre.
During Iliadis’ stay he will also be a guest of the Budokwai. British Judo's London Area Chairman Peter Blewett said that he hopes that this will be the first in a number future events to promote judo in the capital city.
The university event started four years ago as a BJA development initiative and is coordinated by Karen French, London Area Secretary who has overseen the growth of this competition since its inception.
Her hard work has seen this established as one of the premier university competitions in Britain.
Over the years the event has grown in size and although it is in the London area, it has been known to attract entries from as far as Scotland.
Service Manager Andrew Wilesmith continued: “This event is a great development tool for judoka of all abilities, from elite judoka to newcomers to the sport.
"There is currently a big push on getting colleges and universities to enter it as, as it remains a key part of British Judo." Director of Sport at UEL, David Cosford welcomed SportsDock hosting the event ‘University of East London is looking forward to hosting this event for the second consecutive year. UEL has a proud tradition of success in Judo and our current Judo sports scholars, will ensure this tradition continues in the future.”
To find out more about how to take part in the event which takes place at SportsDock, University of East London, Docklands Campus, University Way, London, E16 2RD, email: email@example.com or click here for more details.
Olympic medallist leads taekwondo masterclass at UEL
East London club Gurumu Taekwondo planned to give young people from the local area the opportunity to ‘train with an Olympian’. They got in touch with Lutalo, himself from Walthamstow, to run a taster session and show off some of his Olympic medal-winning moves, which helped the 23 year old take home bronze in the taekwondo men’s competition held at Excel London last summer.
Lutalo said: “I’m really excited to be here today running a session for the kids. I’m going to show them some kicking with the help of the instructors from Gurumu Taekwondo, and then do a quick Q&A at the end. This is my first time at SportsDock and I’m very impressed. It’s state of the art and I’m looking forward to using the facilities.
“After London last summer, I put on a little bit of weight and enjoyed some time off! I’m now right back in it, training and the big focus this year is the Grand Prix in December. That’s going to be the top 32 fighters in the world and the champions will automatically qualify for Rio 2016. I’m aiming for Rio - it’s the foremost thing on my mind right now.”
David Cosford, UEL Director of Sport, added: “At UEL we tirelessly support less traditional sports and we’re delighted to have Lutalo visit us today. The opportunity to have a masterclass from an Olympic medallist, and local East London lad, is such a motivation for the young kids and the turnout has been fantastic. SportsDock is available to the whole community and we encourage individuals, groups and clubs to make the most out of the opportunities available throughout the year.”
Kat Narayanan, Manager at Gurumu Taekwondo said: “We hosted a British taekwondo event at SportsDock a few weeks ago and it went down really well. It’s great for us as we want to hold events in our own area, East London. Today is an excellent opportunity and hopefully we can do more things like this for the borough.”
As well as teaching today at UEL’s SportsDock, Lutalo is also undertaking an interview with BBC Sport ahead of their coverage of the 2013 World Taekwondo Grand Prix taking place 13 – 15 December in Manchester. The interview at Docklands Campus is scheduled to go out on BBC London on Friday 22 November.

SportsDock’s world-class facilities and staff, will ensure this event is an unforgettable experience for all those that are involved.”
In last year’s competition the University of Worcester beat Leeds Met University 71-62 to win their third consecutive championship gold. This year, UEL's Men's 1st team will be competing in the BUCS trophy for the first time after winning both their BUCS league and Conference Cup last year.
The selection process to identify the host venues was a competitive one with nine different universities expressing their interest, many offering world class facilities. Vikki Campbell, BUCS Major Events Manager added “Selecting the hosts for these events was very difficult and the bids received showcased some of the exceptional facilities we have in our institutions . We received several excellent bids but felt that UEL had the edge and we look forward to working with them to put on a great event next March”.
Team UEL will be entering a team of competitor for this year’s Spartan Race UK. This event is a 5km obstacle course taking place in London on Sunday August 25th 2013.
Entry fees will be subsidized and upon entering participants will receive Team UEL merchandise for race day and a Spartan Race training plan.

Students from local schools including Rokeby & Royal Docks school, were also given advice on university life and attending higher education.
Every Child a Sports Person combines introducing students to a range of new sports, whilst also aiming to identify future Olympians through a series of workshops and ability tests. Tests in balance, flexibility, strength, power, and agility amongst others were used to determine athletic prowess, results of which are delivered to the school’s as part of feedback after the programme.
David Cosford, Director of Sport at UEL commented "We are delighted to be involved in Every Child a Sports Person, enabling local students the chance to use our brand new sports facility and to develop sports skills outside of those traditionally taught in schools". He continued “Through ECASP we are encouraging students who enjoyed trying a new sport, to join a community clubs and keep involved”.
